Cyberlaw dictionary is an alphabetical reference guide to technical and legal terms related to the Internet. Sniff

to monitor information packets en route over a network using hardware and/ or software. A device or system designed for this purpose (called a sniffer) may be used both by unscrupulous people trying to gather data for the purpose of theft or unauthorized entry to a system, or by a network system manager for legitimate monitoring purposes.
