Robotics

a subcategory in the artificial intelligence field, robotics is the blending of computer science and engineering that endeavors to create machines which are able to react to sensory input independently. Although the field of robotics has made great strides of late, robots are still unable to perform many practical functions for humans outside the industrial setting. Robotics is a term introduced by Isaac Asimov in his science fiction novel, I, Robot, in 1950.
